I thrive when I create spaces and shapes filled with colour and textures that allow me to share my feelings and encapsulate my emotions in a natural way. I try to create art that speaks for itself and is a mere reflection of my soul. I strive to make the audience an accomplice in my artwork which is a visual sample of fantasy, illusions and dreams that interweave with a magic and endless reality of traces and colour.
Mercedes starts her artwork by spreading a paste and colour on a canvas. She leverages different instruments (e.g. nails) to start composing a brand new story with well defined traces. Her paintings come to life as the acrylic integrates with other elements such as paper, letters, numbers, etc. Textures shaded with selective and well balanced colours are created, where geometrical figures or simple sketches merge with words or phrases. More recently, bicycles have been incorporated as the focal point; representing motion and balance.
Mercedes Arsuaga was born in Puebla, Mexico in 1974. Since she was a kid she had the need to create and materialize what crossed her mind. Her life was surrounded by colours, textures, and textiles. Mercedes obtained a Bachelor’s in Design at Degli Abitti Studio in Mexico City. She worked for many years as a fashion designer for kids clothing. Mercedes entered the art scene in 2002 after experimenting through different mechanisms to effectively express her feelings, finding her true passion and mission in life. She learned techniques from various Mexican artists and continued her formal education in abstract art at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Her artwork can be found at various art galleries across Mexico: Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Valle de Bravo and Querétaro. San Miguel de Allende is considered a cultural heritage of humanity and is cornerstone to the art scene in Mexico. It is also considered the platform to enter the international art scene due to the significant influx of foreign art connoisseurs. In addition to being a full time artist, Mercedes hosts year-round workshops for kids, focusing on painting techniques and colour theory.
