The work of Glasgow-born photographer Harry Benson chronicles the spirit of the latter half of the twentieth century. He has been witness to a great many of the major political and social events in modern history. Highlights of his career include; accompanying the Beatles on their first world tour, which led to the “American Invasion” in 1964 and the recording of Robert Kennedy’s assassination in 1968. He has photographed every US president and first family since Eisenhower. Benson was present at both the construction and the destruction of the Berlin Wall. He witnessed the 1989 student protest in Tiananmen Square and escorted President Clinton to Kosovo in 1999. More recently, his shots of NYC on 9/11 have become critically acclaimed.

Harry Benson began working for Life Magazine in 1968 and his photographs have appeared in Esquire, GQ, The New Yorker, Paris Match and Vanity Fair. He has twice been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Harry Benson has many books devoted entirely to his photographs.
